The A1398 Mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro Retinas have a common issue with an IC (Integrated Circuit) on the motherboard. This chip, with time and heat, will slowly break away from the logic board because of poor mechanical support and a low quality solder used. This will generally start as something intermittent and progress into the no image problem!

These A1398 Retinas with no image normally have a straightforward solution that does NOT involve touching the GPU in any way. Unfortunately we do receive quite a few A1398 units that have had an inexperienced tech reflow the GPU because they saw it online. It is sad for us to see a motherboard that could have been permanently fixed, "band-aid fixed" or worse yet - destroyed. Sometimes in this case, we do have the ability to completely bypass the Dedicated GPU and give your Retina life again!
